Short-term Volunteering at My Little Red House
Gemara's Story:
Greetings! My name is Gemara, and I absolutely loved being a Short-Term Volunteer for My Little Red House Bilingual School, and would love to tell you about my experience starting the school's first environmental education after school program, as well as my experience teaching EE at the local high school, too.
Using the tabs above, learn about my After-school program, the photo gallery, and the Environmental Ed. program at the Colegio Normal!
I found out about My Little Red House through a Colorado non-profit called, American Skill Exchange (ASE), which is an Colorado organization focused on connecting skilled volunteers in the USA with service projects in Latin America (www.americanskillexchange.org). Mary Thomas, founder of ASE and past volunteer at My Little Red House, invited me to embark on this wonderful journey to Ocotepeque, Honduras for four great weeks! So, for about a month, I had the pleasure of getting to know the kids and teachers at My Little Red House Bilingual School where I lived with the wonderful Penman family, and got a true immersion experience!
Become a Short-termVolunteer!
Being a Short-Term Volunteer at MLRH was an excellent experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you would be willing to start a project too! Carol would love to see more music and arts programs, expanding the school garden, help with maintenence around the school, etc. If you have special skills or talents, and would like to volunteer in Ocotepeque (and practice those Spanish skills too!) MLRH is the place for you! You will not find a more unique volunteering experience than this, or a better mentor than Carol!
